Artist or Artisan: You Decide Opens at Coventry's Muse Le Belle Artiste
September 14 - October 12, 2008
First Anniversary Celebration & Reception:
Sunday, September 28, from 2-4 pm / Music by Zenos Ero
The age-old debate of art vs. craft / artist vs. artisan is the theme of the new exhibition, Artist or Artisan: You Decide, on view September 14-October 12, 2008 at Muse Le Belle Artiste, a fine arts center at 1141 Main Street in Old Coventry Village, CT. The exhibition focuses on works by painter Shauna Shane and glass craftsman Dennis Peabody.
On Sunday, September 28, 2-4 pm, a mid-exhibition reception will mark the Muse's first anniversary and honor Ms. Shane and Mr. Peabody. Music will be provided by Zenos Eros, a Windham-based group that merges spoken word poetry, performance art and progressive music. The public is invited to attend.
Shauna Shane has been painting professionally for 25 years. Her paintings can be found in collections around the world. A former Resident Artist at Yellowstone National Park, she has taken workshops and master classes with artists including Robert Bateman and Charles Reed and has studied at the Lyme Academy of Fine Art, University of Connecticut, Banff School of Fine Art, and Montana State University.
Working in a variety of mediums including watercolor and oil, Ms. Shane infuses her work with light and color informed by many years of painting from life. Her paintings of the landscape, still life and the figure reflect a solid academic training as well as the ability to communicate not only the energy and the unique atmosphere of a scene, but also that subtle emotional connection between the subject and viewer.
Dennis Peabody has worked with flat glass applications, creating jewelry, stained glass panels, lamps, vases and other glass decorative pieces since 1978. From dichroic glass pins to commissioned stained glass installations, his work is accessible, dynamic and unique. The award-winning artist works from his studio in Hartford.
Mr. Peabody says of his work: "I use the rigid medium of glass in a spontaneous manner and break away from convention whenever possible. Rather than working within the traditional patterned approach to stained glass, I allow the qualities of the glass, stone and other materials to guide me in assembling each work of art. Each work crystallizes and subtle emotional qualities are captured, in much the same way that natural crystals and gemstones are colored by the trace elements and impurities present."
